Folklore & History Peppermint's botanical origin is Mentha x piperita, a natural hybrid of Watermint (Mentha aquatica) and Spearmint (Mentha spicata). Introduced to the USA in the early 19th century, the country has become a major producer of peppermint essential oil.

Therapeutic Properties Peppermint essential oil is renowned for its analgesic, antibacterial, antineuralgic, carminative, cholagogue, decongestant, fungicidal, and stimulant properties. It supports the nervous system by providing cooling relief for headaches and migraines, and helps people become clear-headed and refreshes the spirit. In the lymphatic system, it activates lymph and tissue fluid circulation. For the digestive system, it aids in relieving dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, diarrhea, and flatulence. It supports the respiratory system by addressing sinus infections, colds, influenza, and fever. Within the reproductive system, it assists with dysmenorrhea, and in the integumentary system, it treats eczema, skin irritation, itching, and shingles.
Contraindications According to Tisserand and Young, peppermint oil should be avoided in cases of cardiac fibrillation and in individuals with G6PD deficiency. Always consult a healthcare provider before using essential oils, especially in larger quantities.
